GAO tells Congress that the record levels have burned up $20 billion

WASHINGTON - The jump in U.S. gasoline prices this year has so far drained consumers of an extra $20 billion, or about $146 for each passenger car in the country, the Government Accountability Office told Congress on Tuesday.

The national price for regular unleaded gasoline hit a record $3.22 a gallon this week, and is up $1.05 since the beginning of February, according to the Energy Department.

The added expense is taking money away from consumers to spend on other goods and services.

300 Miles on Hydrogen

chevrolet-sequel-zero-emissions-fuel-cell-drive.jpgBy Larry Burns
GM VP, Research and Development and Strategic Planning

What an exciting day yesterday!

I’ve been working on advanced technologies for a long time, but yesterday has to be one of the highlights of my career.

larry-burns.jpgThat’s because we met our goal of driving the Chevy Sequel fuel cell vehicle 300 miles without refueling it — going from our Honeoye Falls facility in New York State down to Westchester County. This is the farthest a fuel cell vehicle has ever been driven on one tank of fuel on public roads, not on a test track.

GM introduces new Opel Agila

Opel/Vauxhall Agila FrontOpel/Vauxhall Agila RearWhy should we care if there is a new Opel or Vauxhall on the road? Because, if you look carefully you will see a Chevy Minicar that was shown at the NY Auto Show! Take a look at these two pictures then review my previous posts on the 3 Chevy Minicars. This is a production version of those concepts! Take a read here for the full press release from GM. How long do you think it will take for Chevrolet to slap a Chevy bow tie on the front and bring this over to us? With gas creeping to the $4 a gallon mark, this car is looking really good! What do you think? Does the design appeal to you? Would you buy a minicar?

3 GM Minicars, 870,000 votes…

From left to right: The Groove, The Beat, and The Trax.“And the winner is”… well, the Groove is in the lead but, I think the real winner is the American buying public. With 870,000 votes, I think GM has proven there is an interest and a market for a minicar here in America. With gas headed to $4 a gallon this summer (just a guess, but I don’t think anyone will fight me on it) a minicar may be just what we need for commuting and running errands here in Fairfield County! At the very least it would hold us over till the Chevy Volt comes out. Read the whole story here and tell me what you think…

GM Volt to be produced for 2010?

chevy_volt_cutaway.jpg40 Miles. That is the distance that the 2010 Chevry Volt could drive completely on battery. Is it enough? I’ve heard it said that the Toyota Prius can only drive 1 mile on battery alone. So we are making progress, and with an onboard gas engine (or diesel engine) driving a generator, range is not limited to just 40 miles. In fact, I’ve seen range numbers quoted at high as 640 miles on one tank of fuel (to drive the generator that powers the electric motors and charges the battery). But I ask you, would you buy one? If you have a Toyota Prius, would you trade it for a Chevrolet Volt? How far do you commute to work? Would 40 miles be enough for pure battery commuting? Check out this article for more info and comments on the topic.

First Hybrid Tahoe Review

2008 Two Mode Hybrid Chevy TahoeToday I found the first review of the new Hybrid Tahoe. They found, “After a brief drive at the GM proving ground in a pre-production prototype, it was clear that if nothing else the changes done to create a hybrid full-size SUV have resulted in the most refined large truck GM has ever built.”

Sounds like 20mpg on regular gas in a full size SUV is in our immediate future! Read the article here.
