Road Trip: Biofuels or Bust

e85.jpgHere is an article from the Wall Street Journal that seems to miss the whole point of E85!

The author neglects to mention or weigh the merit of the foreign oil NOT being consumed while using E85 or the drastic difference in harmful emissions NOT being produced while burning E85. Consider the statistics at the bottom of the article and the impact it would make on foreign oil consumption and harmful emissions if we all had access to this type of fuel. Simply stated, we can change the US energy policy now if we all had access to E85.

2007 Corvette Le MansFrom Michigan to Le Mans

By Tom Wallace
Global Chief Engineer for Performance Cars

I’ve been an amateur road racer since my college days. The one event that I always wanted to attend was the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As a struggling student, I never imagined that I would become the fourth Chief Engineer in the history of Corvette, and I never dreamed that I would go to Le Mans. Well, dreams do sometimes come true, and I’m in automotive heaven.

V8 Powered Chevy Colorado Just Around the Corner?

07_chevy_colorado_ftsd.jpgTrolling the web this afternoon I found this article on PickupTruck.com. In it they speculate that in 2008 we’ll see the 295-hp 5.3L V8 from the corporate parts bin dropped into the Colorado.

To be honest, I hadn’t thought that GM would offer this level of power in the mid-size Colorado but, with the H3 getting the same motor next year (as the H3 Alpha) and with this V-8’s ability to run on E85 and to deactivate cylinders (effectively becoming a V-4 until the V-8’s power is needed again), this is starting to make perfect sense! We’ll see if they get this rumor right! I hope so, what do you think?

AAA: The Number One Way to Waste Gas is…

Gas PumpThe U.S. Department of Energy reports that the average driver can improve mileage by 3.3 percent simply by inflating their vehicle’s tires regularly. In fact, according to the AAA, under-inflated tires are the No. 1 way we waste gas.

One out of every four cars and one out of every three pickups, vans, and SUVs have at least one extremely low tire. So pick up a tire gauge at your local auto parts store and check your tire pressure whenever you pull into a service station for gas. Your car’s owner’s manual (or rather the drivers door sill) will tell you the recommended PSI — pounds per square inch — rating.

This is one VERY simple thing you can do to combat the rising gas prices!

The E-Flex electric vehicle architecture underpins the Chevy Volt concept car shown earlier this year and is being developed as part of GM’s strategy to diversify transportation away from petroleum.
